Principal's Message
Mr. Larry A. Guilford
Dear Golden Bears Parents and Students,
Welcome to the 2025–2026 school year at Sylvan Hills Middle School, where we proudly embrace our theme for this school year:
I CAN, I WILL, I MUST.
This powerful mantra reflects the unwavering belief we hold for every student who walks through our doors. It’s more than a theme — it’s a mindset. A commitment. A call to action.
Since stepping into the role of Principal, I’ve had the honor of watching our school rise with purpose. Over the past three years, we’ve seen consistent upward growth in student achievement, including a 9% increase in students scoring Proficient & Above in Math on the Georgia Milestones (GMAS) just this past school year. This progress is not by chance. It’s the result of our shared determination — from our brilliant scholars to our passionate educators and supportive families.
At Sylvan Hills, we are rewriting the narrative. We are showing Atlanta, and the world, what’s possible when a community believes, works hard, and refuses to give up.
I CAN believe in my potential.
I WILL put in the work.
I MUST rise above every challenge.
This year, we are doubling down on that belief through bold, student-centered priorities:
We are not just preparing students for the next grade — we are preparing them for life. Our Golden Bears will be problem-solvers, leaders, and change agents. We will hold them to high expectations because we see greatness in them.
I invite every parent and student to join us at Open House on August 1st, where you’ll meet our incredible staff, tour our transformed learning spaces, and learn how we’ll support your child in achieving their best year yet.
Stay connected through our weekly newsletters, website, and social media updates. Your voice matters, and your partnership is the fuel behind our continued success.
Let’s make this year one to remember.
I CAN. I WILL. I MUST. And together — WE WILL.
In partnership and purpose,
Mr. Larry A. Guilford

6th Grade Assistant Principal
Charles Bivins

Hello, I am the proud 6th grade Assistant Principal of the Sylvan Hills Golden Bears. My goal is to ensure that all scholars have positive experiences that offer them opportunities to thrive. We are excited about the new and innovative things that we will be doing this school year. In addtion to the traditional academic and elective courses, all scholars will be a part of a "House" that will focus on character development. We are also excited about our newly adopted signature program, S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). These are a few of the wonderful things we have in store. I am looking forward to a great school year and I'll see you around the Golden Bear Den!

Alesha James

Greetings, Golden Bears. My name is Alesha James. I am incredibly excited to serve as your 7th grade Assistant Principal. It is my pleasure to help lead Sylvan Hills Middle School in providing students with the education and life skills required to cultivate change, be innovative, and develop confidence. I am currently in my 20th year of education. Most recently I have worked as a Multi-tiered Support Specialist at Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy, where I have also served as a 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts teacher for 13 years. It takes a village. I look forward to building relationships with students, families, faculty & staff, as well as the community to partner in providing the best education, support, and resources to help every student achieve excellence in school and beyond.
